The 6th Grade Gets An Author Visit!

Sixth grade students at John J. Pershing were given an exciting opportunity to meet New York Times bestselling author, Jennifer Holland. Her latest book, in her Unlikely series entitled, Unlikely Heroes is a popular book among students. They were very excited to meet Ms. Holland, as well as hear about her exciting real life adventures with animals and nature.

Ms. Holland not only writes her own books, but also researches for National Geographic. Her stories about amazing animal encounters allowed students to see firsthand how the subjects of science and language arts can be combined to create a published writing piece. Furthermore, having students become enthusiastic about reading, specifically a nonfiction text, is a fantastic way to prepare for the state exam and seventh grade.

This was John J. Pershing’s first ever author visit. Both students and teachers enjoyed the event, as it was a rare opportunity to meet such an accomplished published writer.  A special thank you to 6th grade ELA teacher, Ms. Sica, who organized the event.
